Abstract
This diploma thesis aims to describe similarities and differences regarding position of verbs between Standard German and Old English. The fundamental operations and verb-movements within a sentence caused by the verb-second constraint in these two languages are covered. It was observed that both Old English and Standard German are V2 languages, which makes their similarity indisputable. However, the fact that V2 is only a strong preference in OE with many other possibilities is what makes the two languages different. The thesis also presents the most significant changes regarding the position of verbs after Old English that lead to differentiation of English language from German and other fellow Germanic languages. Old English excerpts from The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle dating from the year 755 to 877 have been compared to Standard German examples from Die Chronik der Deutschen.
Abstract (croatian)
Cilj je ovog diplomskog rada opisati sličnosti i razlike u položaju glagola između standardnog njemačkog i staroengleskog jezika. Predstavljene su osnovne operacije i promjene u položaju glagola unutar rečenice uzrokovani ograničenjem koje iziskuje glagol na drugom mjestu u rečenici (V2) u ova dva jezika. Uočeno je da su i standardni njemački i staroengleski V2 jezici zbog čega je njihova sličnost neporeciva. Međutim, činjenica koja ova dva jezika razlikuje je da u staroengleskom V2 samo ima prvenstvo nad ostalim jednako mogućim položajima glagola. Ovaj diplomski rad također predstavlja najznačajnije promjene u položaju glagola nakon staroengleskog razdoblja koje su dovele do daljnjeg razlikovanja engleskoj jezika od njemačkog i drugih srodnih germanskih jezika. Odlomci iz Anglosaskih kronika na staroengleskom jeziku u razdoblju između 755. i 877. godine uspoređeni su s primjerima iz knjige Kronike Nijemaca na standardnom njemačkom.
