Managers face many challenges in their work. The importance of managers is best seen in large and complex organizations, in which managers make up a small proportion of all employees. However, management is also essential for the business of any type of organization (from small to large companies or associations) in any business context (from for-profit to non-profit). At the same time, nowadays, responsibility for results is expected from all employees, and therefore the boundary between managers and non-managers is very fluid and unclear. From the aspect of management as a theoretical framework, it is essential how efficient and effective managers are in doing their job. However, it is relatively unexplored how general management theory works in the non-profit sector in public or in the context of managing sports associations and amateur sports clubs. This final paper aims to critically analyze the role and specifics of essential managerial functions in the segment of sports associations. The research subject in this final paper is the amateur basketball club Vinkovci, which was the starting point for reflection and generalization of managerial challenges characteristic of this form of organization. Based on the information gathered by interviewing the president and vice president of the Vinkovci basketball club, the basic tasks, management and organizational scheme of amateur sports were interpreted. Qualitative analysis of the collected data indicates that various management issues and club management are dealt with by persons whose primary occupation is not in the field of management or even economics, and that the dominant managerial challenge in the context of amateur sports is attracting talented coaches and players and retaining quality sponsors and other stakeholders to ensure stable funding for sports clubs.
