The autistic spectrum includes five disorders: autism, Kanner syndrome; Asperger syndrome also known as autistic personality disorder; atypical autism; Rett syndrome and disintergrative disorder. For each disorder in the paper basic characteristics have been named by which to recognise them. People that have a disorder from the mentioned spectrum are characterised for having some special talents. This paper aims to discern the talents that children with disorder from the autistic spectrum have in the area of artistic creation. The goal of this paper is to discern the therapeutic effects of artistic creation, but also to recognise creativity as the main characteristic of artistic creation. Because of its importance one chapter has been dedicated to creativity and its historic progression. Factors with which we recognise person's creativity are also mentioned. Art as therapy is explained in more detail in the chapter on therapeutic effects of artistic creation in work with autistic children. Considering the different aspects of art, different therapies based on a variety of art forms have been created, such as music therapy, dance therapy, visual therapy etc. Special emphasis is being placed on visual therapy in the work with autistic children, and their development. Visual therapy is key to recognise the talents and creative expression of a child with autism. Attesting to that are the experiences of children from the Centre for autism in Split, regarding to their picture books. Work with picture books has shown great effectiveness in expression of emotions and ideas through drawings or pictures. Though drawings the autistic child gives an insight into its thoughts to the visual therapist and thereby establishes symbolic communication. Artistic therapy helps not only the child but also people that interact with the child to better understand which confirms the results of two studies by foreign authors mentioned in this paper. All that affects the work with autistic children and their behaviour.
