The European Parliament is one of the most important institutions of the European Union. Other important institutions of the European Union are: the European Commission, the Council of the EU, the European Council, the European Court of Justice and the Court of Auditors. The European Parliament is the legislature of the European Union. It is directly chosen by the voters in the European member states every five years. The last elections were held in May 2014. The European Parliament has got three main work areas: 1. legislative ( it makes regulations together with the Council of the European Union that are suggested by the European Commission), 2. supervisory ( it enforces a democratic supervision over the institutions of the European Union), 3. budgetary (it decides about the budget of the European Union with the Council of the European Union, it approves the long-term budget of the European Union and the perennial financial framework). The number of the representatives of every member state in the European Parliament is approximately proportionate to its population. Every member state can have more than six and less than 96 representatives in the European Parliament and their total number cannot be more than 751 ( 750 and the president). The representatives in the European Parliament are sorted out according to their political orientation, not according to their nationality. The work of the Parliament takes place on two main levels. On the first level are the boards that prepare the legislature of the European Union. There are twenty boards and two subcommittees and each of them deals with the specific field of politics. On the first elections for the European Parliament in the Republic of Croatia, which were held in April 2013, twelve representatives were elected. The second elections were held in May 2014 and eleven representatives were elected.
