The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. The Court’s role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies. The Court is constituted and functions in accordance with the Statute, annexed to the Charter of the United Nations, of which it forms an integral part.All Members of the United Nations are ipso facto parties to the Statute. States which are not members of the United Nations may become parties to the Statute of the Court on conditions to be determined in each case by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. The jurisdiction of the Court in all legal disputes concerns: the interpretation of a treaty, any question of international law, any fact which would constitute a breach of an international obligation, the nature or extent of the reparation to be made for the breach of an international obligation.Only states may be parties in cases before the court, and no state can be sued before the World Court unless it consents to such an action. Any state may consent to the court’s compulsory jurisdiction in advance. The court’s judgment is final and without appeal. The official languages of the Court are English and French. The seat of the Court is in The Hague.
